A student at Moi University Annex Campus has died in an incident that has sent shockwaves across the institution.
The student, identified as Reginah Njeri Wanjiru, was a second-year law student at the Town Campus Annex in Eldoret. According to a death announcement issued by the Office of the Dean of Students, she died on Wednesday, March 25, 2026.
“We regret to announce the untimely death of Reginah Njeri Wanjiru, which occurred on Wednesday, 25th March, 2026.” The Office of the Dean of Students said.
Similarly, the Law Students’ Association of Moi University (LSAMU) described her death as a profound loss to the academic community, noting, “It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we write to inform you of the passing of one of our own.”
Meanwhile, preliminary reports indicate that Wanjiru may have taken her own life, although authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause of death. Investigations are ongoing, with officials expected to release more details soon.
At the same time, sources within the university revealed that she had been scheduled to appear before the university Senate over an alleged examination irregularity case.

Notably, Wanjiru’s death comes amid a series of unrelated, tragic incidents involving students at the university in recent months.
In February 2026, Dickson Mutinda, a second-year Bachelor of Business Management student, reportedly died by suicide, leaving behind a note detailing personal struggles.
Earlier incidents have also drawn attention. In July 2025, Elvis Morara, a first-year student, died after a stabbing during an altercation. In October 2025, Sherry Linet, a fourth-year student, died under unclear circumstances after being taken to the hospital.
Additionally, Leonard Kiptoo, a first-class honours graduate, lost his life in a road accident shortly after the university’s 46th graduation ceremony.

As the university community mourns, attention has shifted to broader institutional and student welfare concerns. Recent reports have pointed to financial and governance challenges facing the university, alongside growing calls for stronger mental health support systems.
Students and leaders now urge the administration to enhance counseling services and adopt more supportive approaches when handling academic and disciplinary cases, as investigations into Wanjiru’s death continue.
