Fuel Panic Hits Shell Stations as Shortages Bite Despite Govt Assurances

Share

Motorists across the country are staring at fuel shortages at several Shell service stations, even as the government maintains that the country has sufficient petroleum stocks.

In a statement dated Thursday, March 26, 2026, Vivo Energy Kenya, the company responsible for distributing and marketing Shell products in Kenya, confirmed that some of its outlets are experiencing temporary stock-outs.

“We have recently experienced increased demand for our products, which has resulted in temporary stock-outs at some service stations,” the company said.

Vivo Energy Kenya said it is actively working to restore supply, noting that its teams are closely monitoring the situation and replenishing affected stations as quickly as possible.

“We appreciate your continued patronage and apologise for the inconveniences caused,” the company added, assuring customers of its commitment to reliable service.

The shortages come just a day after the government moved to calm public concerns over fuel availability, insisting that the country has adequate reserves.

Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, on Wednesday, March 25, warned oil marketers against hoarding petroleum products in anticipation of possible price increases.

“We have noted with grave concern that some retailers are hoarding products with the intention of selling at higher prices. This is unacceptable, and we will take firm action against those found in violation,” said Wandayi.

He described such practices as illegal and against public interest, directing fuel dealers to release any withheld stocks immediately and warning of severe penalties, including the potential loss of licences for non-compliant firms.

The CS also urged Kenyans to avoid panic buying, maintaining that national fuel reserves, including those held by the Kenya Pipeline Company, remain at required levels.

This concern over fuel shortages at petrol stations comes amid tensions in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

The conflict has disrupted activities around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil transportation through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes.

While Iran has not fully closed the strait, it has imposed selective restrictions, allowing passage for nations it perceives not to be hostile to them while limiting access for vessels linked to the United States and its allies.

The partial disruption has led to a surge in global oil and gas prices, causing ripple effects across international markets.
