The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service has released a detailed breakdown of all 20 course clusters, giving students a clearer framework as they prepare to apply for university and college programmes.
The clusters group courses based on related disciplines and subject requirements.
The update comes as thousands of KCSE candidates log into the KUCCPS portal to revise their course selections.
Education experts say the classification will help students align their academic strengths with suitable career paths and avoid incorrect applications.
“Each cluster is designed to align student strengths with specific academic and career paths, ensuring fair and merit-based placement,” KUCCPS stated
“Minimum subject requirements remain key in determining eligibility for programmes under each cluster,” KUCCPS added.
Students must now review subject combinations carefully before making their final submissions.
Universities have already mapped their programmes into these clusters, which creates uniformity in placement decisions across institutions.
Cluster 1 focuses on Law and includes the Bachelor of Laws (LLB). The programme requires strong performance in languages and analytical subjects, making it one of the most competitive options.

Cluster 2 groups Business, Hospitality, and related courses. It includes programmes such as Commerce, Business Administration, Procurement, and Hospitality Management, which continue to attract many applicants.
Clusters 4, 5, 6, and 7 cover Geosciences, Engineering, Architecture, and Computing. These fields require Mathematics and Science subjects, limiting entry to students who meet strict academic thresholds.
Cluster 3 and related clusters provide flexibility. Courses such as Journalism, Sociology, Film, and International Relations allow students from varied academic backgrounds to qualify.

The remaining clusters include Agriculture, Medicine and Health Sciences, Geography, Languages, Music, Mathematics, and General Sciences. Each cluster carries specific subject requirements that students must meet to qualify.
KUCCPS has urged applicants to prioritise courses that match their strengths and interests. The agency insists that meeting minimum subject requirements remains the key determinant in securing placement.
As the application period continues, students now face a crucial stage that will shape their academic journey and future careers.
