We Planned A Coup, But Raila Failed Us – Boniface Mwangi

Share

Activist and presidential hopeful Boniface Mwangi has revealed that there was a coordinated plan to oust President William Ruto during the height of the Gen Z protests in 2024, which he claims was derailed by the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Speaking during a media interview on March 18, 2026, Mwangi said there was a group of individuals, whom he declined to name, with whom he had developed a strategy aimed at sustaining protests and forcing political change.

However, he said the plan collapsed after Odinga engaged the government.

“I think the one who fumbled was Raila Odinga. We told him what you need to do, tell the president to respect the rule of law and let us stay in the streets. This government was going to fall,” Mwangi said.

He further claimed he was among those involved in organising the plan, describing it as a collective effort, though he declined to name others, citing security concerns.

Mwangi argued that had Odinga distanced himself from the government, he could have secured the presidency, adding that the protest movement had gained significant momentum.

At the same time, Mwangi criticised President Ruto, accusing his administration of acting out of desperation amid growing public dissent since the June 2024 protests.

According to Mwangi, the current wave of activism is decentralised and cannot be easily suppressed.

“We are leaderless with leadership. You can’t capture one person and think the movement will die. We are everywhere,” he said.

He also alleged that the president is under pressure following intelligence reports predicting he might lose in the 2027 General Election, claiming that recent political moves are aimed at regaining public support.

Additionally, Mwangi revealed plans to mobilise young voters and non-participants in previous elections through grassroots campaigns such as “Niko Kadi Tuko Kadi,” which encourages voter registration for the upcoming 2027 General Election.

He said his strategy also targets millions of Kenyans who did not vote in the last election, describing them as a “silent majority” that could shape future political outcomes.

Mwangi Dares Authorities to Arrest Him

Mwangi’s remarks have drawn criticism online, with some calling for his arrest over the “coup” claims.

One user, identified as Mkenya Mzalendo, said: “No civilised nation would allow plotting against a legitimate government. Boniface Mwangi and Nerima Wako’s actions expose a serious threat to democracy. Urgent investigations and strict legal measures are essential. #ArrestBonifaceMwangi.”

However, Mwangi responded to those calling for his arrest in a statement issued on Friday, March 27, 2026, vowing to remain defiant.

“The police know where I live. They can arrest me any day. Threats will not stop me from speaking truth to power. You can kill a man, but you cannot kill the revolution,” he said.
