A tragic road accident near Dedan Kimathi University of Technology along the Nyeri-Nyahururu Highway has claimed at least 15 lives, leaving the nation in mourning and prompting emotional messages from top leaders.
The horrific crash, which occurred on Saturday,March 28,2026, involved a 14-seater Nyekicha Sacco matatu and a lorry carrying logs.
According to police reports, the lorry driver swerved while attempting to avoid a cyclist, leading to a head-on collision with the matatu.
Central Regional Police Commander Jasper Ombati confirmed the fatalities, stating that 15 people died on the spot while several others sustained injuries.
“15 people died on the spot, while others were taken to hospitals,” he said.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene and worked late into the evening to rescue survivors and clear the wreckage, as the injured were taken to nearby health facilities for treatment.

Most of the victims are reported to have been passengers in the matatu.
President William Ruto expressed his condolences following the tragedy.
“Our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences go out to the victims of the road accident that occurred this evening near Dedan Kimathi University in Nyeri County,” he said.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also shared a heartfelt message, describing the incident as a painful moment for the country.
“This is a difficult moment for our nation and the several families tonight following the tragic road crash in Nyeri County near Dedan Kimathi University of Science and Technology involving a matatu and a lorry,” he said.
“My family and I send our deepest sympathies to the families who have lost their loved ones and wish quick recovery to the injured ones.”
Gachagua further called for increased caution on the roads, urging both drivers and authorities to prioritize safety.
“I call for maximum care and caution on our roads to save human lives at every point of our journeys. At the same time, authorities charged with responsibility for betterment of our roads and signage must ensure such isn’t a privilege but a right for every road user.”
“One life lost is one too many. May the Almighty God rest the souls of our faithful departed in eternal peace. We pray for the swift recovery of those injured.”
He added that the national government, in conjunction with the Nyeri County government, is engaging with affected families and will provide necessary support during this difficult time.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki also conveyed his condolences while emphasizing the need for road safety.
“Saddened by reports of the loss of 15 people in a tragic road crash near Dedan Kimathi University in Nyeri County. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families, and our hope is for the quick recovery of the injured,” he said.

“Drivers, observe safety precautions. Any time you are on the road, remember your own life, the lives of your passengers and those of other road users are in your hands.”
Authorities have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash, even as concerns rise over road safety along the busy Nyeri-Nyahururu Highway.
The deadly accident adds to the growing number of road tragedies in the country, renewing calls for stricter enforcement of traffic rules and improved road safety measures.
