Spain’s government announced on March 30, 2026, that it has closed its airspace to all U.S. military aircraft participating in the ongoing war against Iran.
“We don’t authorise either the use of military bases or the use of airspace for actions related to the war in Iran,” Magarita Robles, who is Spain’s defence minister, told reporters in Madrid.
The move signals Madrid’s refusal to allow its territory to be used for military operations linked to the conflict.
The decision goes beyond Madrid’s earlier refusal to allow the use of jointly operated bases at Rota Air Base and Morón Air Base for attacks on Iran, significantly restricting Washington’s access and signaling a broader political stand.
The Ban Applies To All U.S Aircraft
The ban applies even to U.S. aircraft operating from third countries a move that underscores Madrid’s refusal to be drawn into a conflict it sees as unjustified.
Spanish Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo stressed the closure reflects Spain’s long standing position that the war begun by the United States and Israel’s strikes on Iranian targets was launched illegally and in violation of established international norms.

US President
U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened trade retaliation against Spain after earlier disagreements ovee accessing the base, raising the area of broader economic strain alongside military disagreements.
Political analysts say Spain’s stand illustrates growing European discomfort with the war’s expansion and increasing civilian casualties. Nationwide anti war protests in Madrid and other cities have echoed calls for negotiation over escalation of the ongoing war.

US Aircraft To Reroute
For Washington, the closure forces significant operational restrategizing, U.S. jets must now reroute around Spanish airspace to reach the Middle East, potentially complicating logistics and fuel planning at a time when global aviation networks are already under tension due to repeated airspace closures across the region.
The Spanish government maintains that closing its skies is not only a legal move, but also a moral one a signal to other NATO allies that support for the war is not automatic.
