Share

A Kenyan man has sparked conversation online after revealing that the Social Health Authority (SHA) covered Ksh 952,000 of his hospital bill during a pacemaker procedure, offering a glimpse into how the country’s new health insurance scheme is supporting patients in need of expensive treatment.

In a post shared on X, user @Chalbiwsk said the approval came without him making personal calls or seeking special intervention.

“I could now confidently say that SHA is working based on my personal experience,” @Chalbiwsk said.

According to the post, the total cost of the pacemaker procedure was approximately Ksh 1.6 million, with SHA covering KSh 952,000 under surgical services authorization.

His remarks quickly attracted reactions from Kenyans online, “They paid mine in July, Ksh 212,500 of the total bill of Ksh 395,000. So when people say it’s not working, I just keep quiet as it’s not my place to speak. Recently they paid for my CT scans,” said @R_Mutuse on X.

Kwa hivyo gava inafanya kazi mi nashukuru. Pengine watu wengine hawajajaribu. Mtu kama mimi siko employed sa ningetoa wapi hio doo yote karibu two hundred thousand,” he said in Kiswahili.

This loosely translates to “ SHA has really helped me because I had a problem and I had no money, but SHA came through. So the government is working because I am unemployed, and where would I have got such kind of money, almost Ksh 200,000.”
