Kenya’s boxing fraternity is in mourning following the tragic death of Kisumu-based professional boxer Jacob Oyoko, who collapsed after a bout on Saturday, March 28.
The incident, confirmed by the Kenya Professional Boxing Commission, has sparked widespread outrage and renewed concerns over safety standards in local boxing competitions.
Oyoko reportedly lost consciousness during a professional match after sustaining heavy blows from his opponent, identified as Julius Okuruchi.
Medical personnel rushed to attend to him, but he later succumbed to his injuries.
While full details surrounding the bout remain unclear, the shocking nature of the incident has raised urgent questions about ringside preparedness and the enforcement of safety protocols.
Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly Robert Alai strongly condemned the circumstances surrounding Oyoko’s death, terming it preventable.
“I wish to condole with the family of Jacob Oyoko, who was killed in the boxing ring by one Julius Okuruchi,” Alai stated.
