President William Ruto on Wednesday met with Gengetone and Urbantone artistes, who shared deeply troubling experiences regarding the loss of rights to their music due to questionable contracts with foreign entities.
The artistes revealed that they have lost over 700 songs, including ‘Sipangwingwi’ by Exray, which was widely celebrated in 2022.
“It is regrettable that our young creatives continue to face exploitation despite their immense talent and contribution to our cultural identity,” Ruto said.
During the meeting, Ruto confirmed that he has facilitated legal support for the affected artistes.
“We will ensure they are adequately represented in court, and we have agreed on practical measures to safeguard their interests and ensure they receive fair reward for their work,” he added.
The President also emphasized the role of Parliament in strengthening intellectual property rights.
He has urged the National Assembly, through the Majority Leader, to fast-track the Creative Economy Bill 2026 alongside critical copyright reforms. These legislative measures aim to protect artistes, secure royalties, and boost Kenya’s creative economy.
Ruto announced that the government has established a digital portal on e-Citizen to aid royalty collection and distribution.
The platform is expected to streamline payment processes and ensure artistes receive timely compensation for their work.
