Easter Crackdown: NTSA Rolls Out Speed Cameras, Sobriety Checks Nationwide

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced plans to conduct a countrywide crackdown on motorists and other road users in the coming Easter holidays.

Through a press release on April 2, 2026, the authority issued a warning to motorists and other road users on the increased operations against reckless driving, drunken driving, and driving of un-roadworthy vehicles.

While addressing the public, the NTSA Director General emphasised the need for road safety during the Easter holiday period.

This is because road accidents are on the increase as Kenyans travel to different destinations to celebrate the holiday period with their loved ones.

“Fellow motorists, as we commemorate this Easter season, I urge every driver and passenger to prioritise safety on our roads,” the statement read, setting the tone for what is expected to be a rigorous crackdown on motorists.

NTSA Rolls Out Several Measures Ahead of Easter Celebrations

The authority confirmed that it is working in close collaboration with the National Police Service to intensify operations nationwide.

NTSA singled out several dangerous driving habits that continue to contribute significantly to road fatalities.

Speeding, the authority noted, remains a leading cause of deadly crashes.

“Speeding remains a leading cause of death—slow down and adhere to posted limits,” the Director General cautioned.

The statement also issued a stern warning against drunk driving, highlighting its impact on judgment and reaction time.

“Drunk driving impairs judgment and reaction time; if you have consumed alcohol, do not get behind the wheel,” NTSA said, reinforcing its zero-tolerance stance on impaired driving.

Driver fatigue was equally flagged as a major risk, particularly for long-distance travelers.

Motorists were advised to take regular breaks to avoid exhaustion.

“Driver fatigue is equally deadly, rest adequately before long journeys and take breaks every two hours,” the statement emphasized.

Enforcement Measures and Vehicles’ Compliance

Besides the focus on the behavior of the drivers, the NTSA emphasized the significance of lane discipline and the practice of safe overtaking.

“Failure to maintain lane discipline, including dangerous overtaking and weaving, puts all road users at risk,” the authority warned, adding that such violations would attract strict penalties.

Motorists were also reminded of the need to handle breakdowns safely.

“For those whose vehicles break down, ensure you park safely off the road and place warning triangles at a sufficient distance,” the statement advised, pointing to common roadside hazards that often lead to secondary accidents.

Crucially, the agency declared that unroadworthy vehicles would not be tolerated on Kenyan roads during the holiday period.

“Finally, unroadworthy vehicles—those with defective brakes, worn-out tyres, or faulty lighting—will be impounded immediately,” NTSA stated, signaling firm action against non-compliant vehicles.

Nationwide Deployment

In order to enforce these measures, NTSA announced that traffic officers, speed cameras, and sobriety checkpoints are to be deployed across the country.

“We shall deploy traffic enforcement officers, speed cameras, and sobriety checkpoints at strategic points,” announced the Director General in his announcement.

The NTSA ended their announcement on a somber note as they remembered those whose lives have been lost as a result of road accidents.

“Remember: every life matters. Let us arrive alive and celebrate with our loved ones. Drive responsibly,” ended the announcement.
