Residents of Murinduko are once again in mourning after a couple linked to the late John Karaba died in a tragic road accident along the Embu–Meru Highway, just days after the former senator’s burial.
The crash has shaken the community, with many struggling to process the back-to-back losses that have struck the same extended family.
The incident took a heartbreaking turn when the victims’ phone rang at the scene. Their son answered the call, unknowingly helping bystanders and authorities identify the couple as residents of Murinduko.
Shortly after, family members, including David Mwai and Martin Mwaura, arrived at the scene and confirmed the identities of the deceased.
They also disclosed that the victims were related to the late senator, adding another layer of grief to an already mourning family.
“It’s a double tragedy,” said a visibly shaken Mwaura. “We have just buried Karaba, and now we are mourning two more people. It is too much,” they said.
The deaths have sent shockwaves across Murinduko, where residents had only recently gathered to pay their last respects to Senator Karaba. Now, the community finds itself grappling with fresh sorrow.
As news spread, locals flocked to the accident scene, expressing both grief and frustration. Many described the Embu–Meru Highway as increasingly dangerous, pointing to a pattern of fatal accidents in recent days.

Residents say the latest crash is not an isolated incident. Instead, it reflects a growing safety crisis along the highway.
“A schoolboy was killed here last week,” said Joseph Mwangi, a resident. “Something needs to be done to stop these accidents.”
In response, community members have urged authorities to act swiftly. They want speed bumps installed, road signs improved, and traffic rules enforced more strictly to reduce speeding and reckless driving.

Meanwhile, families continue to mourn the victims, whose deaths have reopened wounds left by the recent loss of Senator Karaba.
As Murinduko comes to terms with yet another devastating accident, one message stands out clearly: without urgent action, the Embu–Meru Highway may continue to claim more lives.
