Journalist Larry Madowo has found himself at the center of an online debate after a clip of him praising Luxembourg’s free public transport went viral.
In the short video, Madowo highlighted the buses, trams, and trains being completely free for everyone, including residents, tourists, and citizens.
“Honestly, this is too nice to be free. But it is. All of it. Must be nice,” Madowo said, reflecting his astonishment at the system.
Since March 1, 2020, Luxembourg has offered free public transport nationwide, becoming the first country in the world to do so.
All buses, trams, and trains (second class) are free for residents, tourists, and cross-border commuters. The initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion and promote sustainability, funded by taxes.
The clip sparked swift reactions, with some users accusing Madowo of oversimplifying complex issues. Jessica Mwiza criticized the journalist, referencing a previous statement he made about a far-right protest in France.
“This journalist is so clueless. And these people are supposed to understand Eastern Congo and the genocide against the Tutsi?” Mwiza wrote, highlighting what she sees as a pattern of superficial commentary.

Chetuya Chinagolum went further, framing Madowo’s excitement as part of what he called an “embarrassing and childish tourist syndrome.” He argued that Luxembourg’s free public transport is indirectly funded by global inequalities.
“Instead of paying their fair share, multinational corporations set up shell companies in Luxembourg, siphoning billions from Africa while leaving environmental degradation and depleted national treasuries behind,” Chinagolum wrote, outlining a wider critique of global economic systems.
Other social media users offered humorous and reflective takes on Madowo’s observation:
@Shen Shiwei noted, “Luxembourg is much larger than many people’s expectations.”

@Cyber vault drew comparisons with Kenya: “Luxembourg out here making public transport FREE for EVERYONE like it’s nothing. Kenya watching like: ‘Bro, we still negotiating with matatu touts for Ksh 20 change while stuck in jam for 3 hours.’ Free buses? We’ll get it the day our MPs ride bodabodas to Parliament instead of flying choppers to avoid traffic. Unreal indeed, Larry. When, Kenya? When leaders remember the ‘public’ in public service.”
@Isma reflected philosophically: “But how to these countries manage to have such services. I think probably because they are led by people who genuinely love their countries.”
