President Ruto Sends Message to Majembe and Mbavu Destroyer After Heated Match

President William Ruto has congratulated boxer Portifas Odipo, widely known as Majembe, after his victory over Ferdinand Omondi alias Mbavu Destroyer in the Vurugu championship match held on April 4, 2026, at night at the Kasarani indoor arena in Nairobi.

In a statement released after the match on April 5, 2026, President Ruto praised both fighters for their performance, describing the contest as spirited and entertaining.

“Congratulations, Majembe (Portifas Odipo), on your victory against Mbavu Destroyer (Ferdinand Omondi) in yesterday’s vurugu championship. Both of you put up a spirited fight, delivering an entertaining match that kept us on edge, too close to call,” said President Ruto.

President Ruto noted that the match had rekindled public interest in boxing across the country and had also restored excitement among fans.

President Ruto To Support Boxing

“This match has reignited the passion for boxing across the country, restoring fan belief and excitement in the sport,” he said.

President Ruto also said that he will continue to support the sport through investment in talent development and the expansion of opportunities for young boxers in the country.

“We commit to sustain this momentum by supporting the sport, investing in talent, and creating opportunities to grow boxing across the country,” he added.

The highly anticipated fight, which headlined the event that was held on April 4, 2026, at the Kasarani Indoor arena, drew thousands of spectators, while many more fans also followed the match online.

Social Media

The match came after months of intense rivalry between the two fighters that began on social media platforms before evolving into a nationally followed boxing match.

Majembe, a 21-year-old boxer from Kisumu, emerged victorious after dominating the match and forcing a stoppage in the fourth round after he hit Mbavu Destroyer, who then became unable to continue the match.

Judges awarded the fight to Majembe after reviewing the completed rounds.

Match Organized By Oga Obinna

The boxing contest, which was organised by comedian and content creator Oga Obinna, attracted support from political leaders, corporate sponsors and fans across the country, which highlighted the growing popularity of grassroots boxing events in Kenya.

What began as a viral online rivalry between two young men from different places eventually grew into one of the most talked-about boxing events in recent years. This signals renewed interest in the sport among the Kenyan youth.
