Two Kenyan lawyers, Nelson Havi and Ahmednasir Abdullahi, have raised legal concerns after a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier shot and killed a camel at a border post in Mandera County.
Ahmednasir reacted strongly to the incident and signalled plans for legal action.
“Totally unacceptable. Let me make a few calls and locate the owner with a view to seek legal redress,” he stated.
His remarks came as the story spread online and drew public attention.
According to a newspaper report, the incident occurred at Towfiq Trading Centre in Rhamu sub-county near a Chinese road construction site under military guard.
At around 11:15 p.m., a KDF sentry spotted what he considered a suspicious figure approaching the camp.
Due to poor visibility, the soldier initiated a password challenge to identify the figure.
However, the figure did not respond. The sentry then fired warning shots. When the figure still failed to comply, he opened fire using an M240B machine gun.
The following morning, officers discovered that the suspect was a camel. The animal lay dead about 10 metres from the camp gate with a gunshot wound to the head. Authorities are yet to identify the owner.

Meanwhile, Nelson Havi weighed in on the matter, drawing attention to possible legal implications surrounding the use of force.
The involvement of both lawyers signals a likely legal follow-up once authorities identify the camel’s owner. Their reactions have already intensified public debate over accountability.

So far, the Kenya Defence Forces have not issued an official statement on the matter.
Meanwhile, efforts to trace the camel’s owner continue. Ahmednasir has maintained his position, stating his readiness to pursue the case once he identifies the affected party.
The case now sets up a potential legal battle that could test how security agencies apply force in volatile border regions.
