Footage from a CCTV camera recording the shocking scenes in which Senator Godfrey Osotsi of Vihiga was brutally assaulted by unknown assailants in a restaurant in Kisumu has become available, causing uproar throughout the nation, along with many fears for the security of politicians in Kenya.
According to the footage, Senator Osotsi can be seen being beaten by two unknown persons while lying on the ground.
The assailants then go on to beat the senator’s entire body for almost four minutes before he is escorted out by hotel management personnel.
In reaction to this incident, the leadership of Kisumu County has issued a statement strongly condemning what happened, describing it as a gross violation of democracy and the supremacy of law.
“Kisumu County has this afternoon received with profound shock and outrage reports of a violent physical attack on the Senator of Vihiga, Hon. Godfrey Osotsi, at a shopping mall within Kisumu City Centre,” said Deputy Governor Mathew Owili.
“On behalf of the County Government of Kisumu and under the leadership of H.E. Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, I wish to state, in the strongest terms possible, our unequivocal and total condemnation of this cowardly, criminal, and utterly unacceptable act. Such brazen violence has no place in our society and stands in direct affront to the rule of law, public order, and the democratic values we hold dear.”
“This attack, carried out by individuals whose identities remain unknown, is not only an assault on a leader but an attack on the very fabric of civility, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence that defines our country. Kisumu is, and shall remain, a bastion of order, dignity, and respect for human rights.”

Authorities have been urged to move with speed to identify and prosecute those responsible for the attack, amid growing political pressure and public scrutiny.
“We therefore call upon the National Police Service and all relevant security agencies to move with utmost speed, precision, and determination to investigate this heinous act, apprehend all those responsible, and ensure they face the full force of the law without delay or exception. There must be no room for impunity.”
“The leadership of Kisumu County wishes to state categorically that in the spirit of true democracy, every individual is entitled to hold and express their opinion, however divergent, without fear of intimidation, harassment, or violence. Divergence of views is not a justification for lawlessness. It is a cornerstone of democratic engagement and must be accommodated with tolerance and respect at all times.”
“Let it be known, clearly and finally, that Kisumu County will not tolerate any form of political violence, intimidation, or criminal conduct within its jurisdiction. Those who imagine that they can undermine peace and stability through acts of brutality are gravely mistaken. The law will catch up with them, and justice will be served.”
“We stand in solidarity with Hon. Godfrey Osotsi and wish him a swift recovery.”

The attack has triggered sharp reactions across the political divide, with leaders alleging coordination and demanding accountability.
Siaya Governor James Orengo described the incident as premeditated and part of a wider pattern of intimidation.
“The barbaric, early morning ambush on Linda Mwananchi, Principal and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi at Java House, Western Mall in Kisumu, is a disgusting display of cowardice. Make no mistake, this was not a random act of violence.”
“This is a clearly coordinated and organized pattern of intimidation aimed at silencing the voices of the people, coming as a second direct hit after the violent assault at the Grand Royal Swiss Hotel on the eve of our Kakamega Rally.”
“We demand that the police immediately produce the CCTV footage from Java House and ensure the culprits are brought to book without further delay. Organizing this hit in the heart of Kisumu is a desperate and primitive attempt to incite tribal warfare between the Luo and Luhya communities, but we see through these dirty divide-and-rule tactics!
“These cowardly acts will not stop us. To the planners and their goons, you are wasting your time because you cannot kill an idea whose time has come. Linda Mwananchi is a movement of the people, and this movement is UNSTOPPABLE!
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna also weighed in, confirming the lawmaker had sustained injuries.
“I have spoken to Senator Osotsi’s team and confirmed that he was viciously attacked and injured in Kisumu earlier today when he went to get a haircut. The Senator is being airlifted to Nairobi as we speak. Whilst we wait for further details, I strongly condemn this attack and ask the Police for immediate action on those responsible.”
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino went further, directly linking the attack to senior government officials.
“PS for Insecurity Raymond Omollo sent goons who attacked Hon. Godfrey Osotsi in Kisumu today. Quick Recovery Mhesh.”
