Law enforcement officers in Makindu have dismantled a donkey slaughter syndicate and also arrested a couple who are allegedly behind the whole operation.
In a report issued by DCI on April 8, 2026, authorities confirmed that the syndicate was reportedly preparing to supply illegal donkey meat to the Kamboo area in Nairobi County.
According to the DCI, the operation was intelligence-led, and it followed an anonymous tip that pointed to a secluded homestead which was being used as a makeshift slaughterhouse.
DCI says that at the time of the raid, twenty donkeys had already been slaughtered and their carcasses were found on the ground.
A multi-agency team, comprising DCI detectives, Kenya Police Service (KPS) officers, and NGAO administrators, moved fast in order to intercept the suspects.
The suspects caught are Grace Mutile, who is 47years, and Bonface Mutunga, who is 52.
Their escape vehicle, a grey Isuzu D-Max registration number KDJ 385Z, was also caught before it could transport the meat to Nairobi.

DCI has reported that some accomplices escaped into nearby bushes during the raid, but the two identified masterminds were apprehended and are currently in custody.
Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) experts were deployed to collect, bag, and tag evidence from the site.
The Agency has also said that veterinary and public health officers were also on site to assess the meat and ensure that it does not enter the food chain, citing potential health risks which are associated with unregulated slaughter and consumption of donkey meat.

DCI has urged Kenyans to report any suspicious meat joints, underground slaughterhouses, or illegal meat trading activities.
The arrested couple is expected to appear in court in the coming days, while investigations continue taking place to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the case.
The DCI has reassured the public that intelligence-led operations will continue to take place to prevent illegal meat from reaching consumers.
