Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has changed his tune on calls urging Kenyans to make President William Ruto a one-term president.
While addressing mourners in the presence of the Head of State at the requiem mass of Ol Kalou MP David Njuguna Kiaraho, the former deputy president urged residents to remain calm and refrain from chanting “wantam” slogans, allowing the president to address the mourners without interruption.
Gachagua stated that the “wantam” chants could be expressed outside the funeral as part of their political rights, but when President Ruto is called upon to address the mourners, everyone, regardless of political affiliation, should allow the Head of State to speak without interference.
“I don’t want to hear anybody chanting ‘wantam’ here. We can do that outside, but not here,” said Gachagua.
He added that President William Ruto should be given his due respect, allowed to go everywhere in Kenya, complete his business, and then leave.

Gachagua also addressed the President directly, urging him to “create peace” with the Mt. Kenya community and warning against labelling the region’s leaders as “tribal.
At the same time, Gachagua spoke about his impeachment and accused some of his allies, including the Majority Leader of the National Assembly and Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah, among those who persuaded President Ruto to orchestrate his impeachment.

He stated that the National Assembly Majority Leader is among those misadvising the President and letting his administration down, and should be avoided.
Gachagua also criticized Deputy President Kithure Kindiki for what he described as cultural “bad manners,” accusing him of violating Kikuyu traditions by discussing the Ol Kalou by-election and inheritance before the deceased was buried.
Besides political discussions during the funeral, the former DP eulogised Kiaraho as a peaceful man with whom he served in the 11th Parliament, contrasting Kiaraho’s loyalty with what he described as the current administration’s betrayal.
