Four Sentenced to Death for Murder of Former Kabete MP George Muchai

Share

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has secured a death sentence against four individuals linked to the murder of former Kabete Member of Parliament, George Muchai, his two bodyguards, and a driver.

The court sentenced Erick Munyera, Raphael Kimani, Mustafa Kimani, and Stephen Asitiva on Thursday after finding them guilty on three counts of robbery with violence.

The conviction marks a significant step in a case that has drawn national attention since the killings in February 2015.

“The four accused persons carried out a series of violent robberies on the nights of February 6 and 7, 2015. They used a G3 rifle and pistols during the attacks, which heightened fear among their victims,” the prosecution stated.

Further, the prosecution told the court that the accused had violently robbed Michael Ngatia, Gladys Waithera, and Irene Muthoni on separate occasions.

They threatened to use violence while executing the crimes and took advantage of their weapons to overpower the victims.

“During the robberies, they stole property valued at approximately KSh 1.1 million,” it added.

Violent Robberies and Stolen Property

In addition, the suspects stole two motor vehicles, a gas cylinder, four mobile phones, a laptop, and cash. Their coordinated approach and use of firearms strengthened the prosecution’s case.

Moreover, the court heard that the suspects acted with clear intent to intimidate and harm their victims. Their actions demonstrated the level of danger they posed to the public and reinforced the seriousness of the charges.

Additional Sentences for Firearm Offences

Meanwhile, the court also sentenced two other accused persons, Jane Wanjiru and Margaret Njeri, to 10 years in prison. The court found them guilty of possessing a firearm and ammunition without a valid firearm certificate.

Their conviction highlighted the wider network linked to the crimes and raised concerns over the illegal possession of firearms.

Strong Prosecution Case

Notably, the prosecution built a strong case by presenting testimony from 36 witnesses who linked the accused persons to the crimes.

As a result, the court relied on this evidence to convict the four individuals. The prosecution clearly demonstrated its involvement in the series of violent robberies tied to the broader case.

Willy Momanyi, Principal Prosecution Counsel, led the case and presented the evidence that secured the convictions.

Ultimately, the ruling brings a sense of closure to a case that has remained in the public eye for years while also reinforcing the judiciary’s firm stance against violent crime.
