Share

A Kenya Power field officer has been airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment after being assaulted while on duty in Isiolo.

In a statement issued on Thursday, April 9, 2026, the power utility company condemned the attack, revealing that the staff member, identified as a meter reader, sustained serious injuries during the incident.

The company said the employee was carrying out official duties at the time of the assault, describing the attack as both unfortunate and unacceptable.

“This is sadly not an isolated incident. Some of our employees have previously been attacked while carrying out their duties. Such criminal acts undermine service delivery to our customers,” the statement read.

The utility firm further called on members of the public to support its staff as they discharge their responsibilities across the country, warning that such incidents not only endanger workers but also disrupt essential services.

The injured officer is currently receiving treatment in Nairobi.

This is not the first time a Kenya Power official has been assaulted by members of the public while on duty.

Past Incident of a KPLC Official Being Assaulted

In July 2023, an incident involving Kitui East Member of Parliament, Nimrod Mbai, drew national attention after a Kenya Power team visited his residence in Kitengela, Kajiado County, to disconnect an illegal electricity connection. The situation escalated when the legislator confronted the officials, leading to a physical altercation.

The incident, captured on video and widely shared, showed the MP assaulting a Kenya Power engineer and issuing threats during the confrontation.

Witnesses and footage also captured Mbai threatening to shoot the official and attempting to draw a firearm during the heated altercation.

Kenya Power’s leadership, including then-Managing Director and CEO Joseph Siror, publicly condemned the assault, terming it part of a worrying trend of attacks on its staff.

The matter sparked public outrage, with rights groups, including the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, calling for accountability and investigations into the incident.

Authorities later took action, with the legislator surrendering to police and facing assault-related charges.
