A Kenya Power staff member has died after succumbing to injuries sustained during an attack while on duty in Isiolo County.
In a statement issued on Friday, April 10, 2026, the power utility confirmed that the employee, identified as Shadrack Makembo, passed away on Thursday evening, hours after he had been airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment.
According to the company, Makembo was attacked in the Checheles area near Isiolo Town while carrying out his duties. He initially received emergency treatment at the scene before being transferred to Nairobi, where he later died.
Kenya Power expressed deep sorrow over his death, extending condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
“The company deeply regrets to announce the passing of one of our staff members… We continue to stand with his family during this difficult time,” the statement read.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident may have been linked to suspected fraudulent electricity consumption at the premises where the attack occurred.

The company condemned the killing, terming it a criminal act, and revealed that a suspect identified as Sheikh Mayo is currently at large. Kenya Power said it is working closely with security agencies to ensure the suspect is apprehended and brought to justice.
The utility firm further noted that attacks on its staff are not isolated incidents, warning that such acts undermine service delivery and endanger employees’ lives.
Kenya Power reiterated its commitment to enhancing the safety and welfare of its workers and called on members of the public to support its staff as they serve communities across the country.
This is not the first occasion that a Kenya Power employee has faced assault from members of the public while performing their duties.
In July 2023, a situation involving Kitui East Member of Parliament, Nimrod Mbai, gained national attention after a Kenya Power team went to his home in Kitengela, Kajiado County, to disconnect an illegal power connection.

The situation escalated when the MP confronted the officials, resulting in a physical confrontation.
The event, which was recorded on video and circulated widely, depicted the MP attacking a Kenya Power engineer and making threats during the dispute.
Witnesses and the footage also showed Mbai threatening to shoot the employee and trying to pull out a weapon during the intense confrontation.
The incident prompted public outrage, with human rights organisations, including the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, demanding accountability and inquiries into the matter.
Afterwards, authorities took measures, with the legislator turning himself in to the police and facing charges related to assault.
