A 12-year-old boy died after drowning in a swimming pool in Ngurubani town, Mwea, Kirinyaga County, on Thursday.

The tragedy occurred just two days before his scheduled baptism.

The boy had been preparing for his baptism at St. Joseph Allamano Wang’uru Catholic Church, with the ceremony set for Saturday.

Police said the incident occurred in a children’s pool at a local facility.

Responders rushed the boy to a nearby private hospital. Doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

Detectives from Wang’uru Police Station have launched investigations to establish what led to the drowning.

Officers said they will review CCTV footage from the scene and record statements from those present.

Family Devastated by Sudden Loss

Residents who spoke after the incident identified the boy’s mother as Rose Kagendo, who works at a private hospital in Mutithi, located a few kilometres from Ngurubani.

On the day of the tragedy, Kagendo had reportedly taken her son to church earlier in the morning for final baptism preparations before proceeding to work.
