Chelsea Vs Manchester City: Tactics, Squad News and Predictions

Share

Chelsea will host Manchester City at Stamford Bridge this Sunday, April 12, 2026, in a big Premier League match, as both teams continue their push for important points.

Both sides come into the game in strong form after big wins in the FA Cup. Liam Rosenior’s team scored seven goals against Port Vale, while Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City beat Liverpool 4-0.

Chelsea is currently 6th in the table with 48 points, while Manchester City occupies 2nd place with 61 points.

Opinions from Pep & Liam

  • Chelsea

Liam Rosenior on Guardiola, “he’s won trophies, he’s reinvigorated the team, he’s refreshed the squad and also had time to put his style together. He’s an unbelievable manager and one you look to. Of course we can beat Manchester City-we’re a very good team.”

“We’ve gone through a difficult run, but when I analyse the games we’ve had, we’ve caused every team problems even if we haven’t had the results to show for it.

“I have huge respect for Guardiola; I don’t have a big enough ego not to respect people. He’s influenced everyone in football, but now I want my team to show what we’re capable of on Sunday.”

  • Manchester City

Addressing the media ahead of the Chelsea clash, the Spanish manager didn’t hold back on the high stakes of the title race.

Even with two games in hand, he hammered home the absolute necessity of a perfect run, insisting that winning every remaining fixture is the only path forward.

He also pointed to the razor-thin margin in the standings, noting that with the current point gap, even a single draw could effectively end their title hopes.

“If we don’t win at Stamford Bridge, maybe we don’t need to do a press conference before Arsenal because it will be over”, the manager exclaimed.

Everybody knows it, you know it, I know it, the players know it. Everybody in England knows it. How many games left? You have to win all of them. All. Not one draw, forget about it.”

“Nine points is a lot of points against Arsenal.”

Tactics

  • Chelsea

Liam Rosenior’s Chelsea employs a possession-oriented, high-intensity system, often utilizing a 4-2-3-1 or 3-4-3 hybrid, focused on building from the back and aggressive man-to-man pressing.

His tactics feature “possession with purpose,” using slow, short passes to bait opponent pressure before exploiting space behind them, often aiming to create central overloads through tucked-in wingers and advancing full-backs.

  • Manchester City

Pep Guardiola’s tactics revolve around “Positional Play,” aiming to dominate opponents through 60-70%+ possession, high pressing, and rapid ball recovery.

Key innovations include inverted fullbacks, creating central overloads (3-2-5 or 3-2-4-1), and using a “false nine” to disrupt defensive lines, often evolving into a 3-2-4-1 to support striker Erling Haaland.

Score Predictions

Manchester City are expected to win this match, and possibly by a comfortable margin.

Chelsea had some good results at the beginning of Liam Rosenior’s time in charge, but their performances have dropped in recent weeks.

In the past three months, their only really strong performance came in an away match against Aston Villa.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have also been a bit inconsistent, but if they play as well as they did in their last two games, they should be able to win without too much trouble.

Score prediction: Chelsea 1-3 Manchester City.
