Nine Kenyan seafarers remain stranded in Kilwa, Tanzania after authorities impounded their fishing vessel over alleged human trafficking.
The Seafarers Union of Kenya (SUK) made the announcement while raising urgent calls for government intervention.
SUK Secretary General Atie Ramadhan said Tanzania seized the Sea Mfalme on March 30, 2026, with nine Kenyan crew members.
Ramadhan stated that the seafarers are held in Kilwa under difficult conditions, with little information
SUK has urged the Kenyan government to act swiftly to secure the crew’s release and ensure their safety.
“We are calling for immediate intervention to assist these Kenyans who are stranded in a foreign country under challenging conditions,” she said.

Ramadhan asked Mining XS Ali Hassan Joho and Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi to expedite diplomatic efforts with Tanzania.
According to SUK, the vessel’s detention followed allegations related to human trafficking, although officials have not publicly disclosed detailed evidence or charges against the crew.
The union stressed the seafarers’ right to fair treatment during investigations of the case.

Ramadhan emphasized the need for due process, noting that the prolonged detention without clear communication has heightened anxiety among the seafarers’ families back in Kenya.
The case underscores the risks faced by Kenyan seafarers when operating in foreign waters, where vessel seizures can leave crews stranded for extended periods without adequate legal or consular support.
Maritime workers often rely on government intervention in such cases to navigate complex international legal systems.
SUK said it is closely monitoring developments and continues to engage relevant authorities to push for a swift resolution.
Families of the stranded seafarers are now anxiously awaiting feedback as efforts intensify to secure their safe return home.
