EPRA Raises Fuel Prices: Petrol Up Ksh 28, Diesel Ksh 40 for April–May Cycle

Share

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced the latest fuel prices in its monthly review, coming amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East between Israel and Iran, as well as a Ksh 4.8 billion importation scandal carried out outside the government-to-government (G-to-G) framework, which has led to the resignation of three energy bosses.

In a notice dated Tuesday, March 14, 2026, the authority announced the maximum retail prices of petroleum products, which will take effect from April 15, 2026, to May 14, 2026.

“In accordance with Section 101(y) of the Petroleum Act 2019 and Legal Notice No.192 of 2022, the Energy & Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has calculated the maximum retail prices of petroleum products which will be in force from 15th April 2026 to 14th May 2026,” EPRA noted.

In the period under review, the maximum allowed petroleum pump prices for Super Petrol and Diesel increases by Ksh 28.69/litre and Ksh 40.30/litre respectively while the price of Kerosene remain unchanged.

According to EPRA, the prices are inclusive of the Value Added Tax (VAT), in line with the VAT Act, 2013 as read with Legal Notice No.69 dated 14th April 2026, the Finance Act, 2023, the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2024 and the revised rates for excise duty adjusted for inflation as per Legal Notice No. 194 of 2020.

EPRA noted that the VAT rate on Super Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene has been reduced from 16 per cent to 13 per cent, a move aimed at cushioning consumers from the high landed cost of petroleum products driven by rising international prices.

Additionally, the government will further ease the burden on consumers through the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) Fund, by allocating approximately KSh6.2 billion to stabilise pump prices.

At the same time, EPRA clarified that the Super Petrol delivered by One Petroleum aboard MT Paloma has not been factored into the computation of the applicable pump prices, in line with an earlier government directive.

“We wish to reiterate that, as per the earlier directive from the Government, the Super Petrol delivered by One Petroleum ex MT Paloma has not been included in the computation of the applicable prices,” EPRA stated.
