Share

A passenger bus went off a highway and drove off into a ravine in southern Ecuador, killing at least 14 people and injuring 29 others, authorities said on Wednesday.

The accident occurred along the Cuenca–Molleturo road in Azuay province, a mountainous region known for its winding, often rough roads.

Emergency responders stated that the bus was traveling along the rough mountainous area when the driver reportedly lost control, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and fall into a steep ravine alongside the road.

The rescue teams, including firefighters, police officers, and paramedics, were quickly deployed to the scene to rescue the survivors.

Emergency services worked for hours to pull survivors from the wreckage and transport the injured to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.

Rescuers believed some victims were still stuck inside the crushed remains of the bus, while others may have thrown themselves from the vehicle during the fall.

The Authorities stated that the difficult terrain and steep slopes made it hard for the rescue efforts, slowing access to certain parts of the crash site.

Preliminary reports suggested that the bus may have suffered mechanical failure or that the driver lost control due to the challenging road conditions, although investigations are still ongoing to establish the exact cause of the accident
