A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer is in police custody following the fatal stabbing of his wife in an incident that occurred on Tuesday, April 14, at their home in St. Mary’s Estate in Nakuru County.
Police identified the suspect as Captain Edwin Kaunga-Mudomi, who is accused of killing his wife, Anita Mugweru, during a domestic dispute. The incident reportedly took place in the presence of their four-year-old daughter.
According to detectives, the couple had an altercation that escalated into violence, culminating in the fatal stabbing.

A housemaid who witnessed part of the events, Niumbe Winnie, narrated the sequence leading up to the incident.
Winnie, who had worked for the family for three months, said the officer left the house in the morning, claiming he was going for a run, and asked his wife for money, which she agreed to send later. Anita then left for work, leaving the housemaid with the child.

She recounted that the officer returned home at around 1:00 p.m., slept for several hours, and later stepped out briefly before returning. Anita arrived home at about 5:30 p.m. and found the door locked, prompting her to knock.
“Edwin asked her to sit so they could talk, but she said she was tired,” Winnie said.
The situation reportedly escalated when Anita received a phone call from a student, which angered the officer. He accused her of speaking to other men while refusing to engage with him.
Winnie said the argument intensified, with Anita accusing her husband of previous physical abuse and threats to kill her. She also accused him of misusing a loan and suggested involving their parents to resolve their marital issues.
The housemaid said Anita later sent her to the shop with the child. Upon returning, she found the couple still arguing. While she was in the kitchen preparing supper, the officer allegedly took a knife and stabbed his wife.
Despite sustaining critical injuries, Anita managed to raise an alarm, attracting the attention of neighbours who rushed to assist her. She was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead hours later.

The suspect was subsequently arrested and is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
The incident has sparked outrage among human rights activists, who criticised authorities for failing to act on previous reports of threats made against the deceased.
One activist claimed that Anita had earlier reported threats at a local police post, but no decisive action was taken.
“It is not the first time these incidents are being reported. Where are women supposed to run to if cases are reported and no action is taken?” the activist posed.
Another activist called for swift justice, urging authorities to make an example of the suspect in line with recent directives from the head of State on addressing rising cases of femicide.
The family of the deceased is now demanding justice, even as pressure mounts on authorities to ensure accountability and better protection for victims of domestic violence.
