CNN International Correspondent Larry Madowo has triggered widespread online discussion after revisiting his early ambition of becoming a Catholic priest, a path he once considered before shifting into journalism.
In a post that quickly went viral on X, Madowo wrote, “I wanted to become a Catholic priest but failed. I’m only working at CNN as a backup until I can go back to my true calling as Fr Larry, or is it too late?”
“It is too late now. Your backup plan must turn into your true calling,” one X user responded.
As the post spread, users debated career shifts and whether people ever truly abandon their original dreams.
Madowo’s reflection connected with many people who have changed career paths over time. He attended a Catholic seminary environment during his school years, where he first developed an interest in the priesthood before moving into media and communication studies.
Madowo explains that journalism also serves as a form of service. He believes storytelling allows him to inform the public, challenge authority, and highlight issues that matter. In this sense, he treats journalism as a continuation of his original desire to serve people, just through a different platform.
“We used to be told many are called but few are chosen. So I guess I was not chosen and that’s why I do this now,” he reflected.
“My backup option was CNN so far so good. But if the pope calls I will go back,” he also added with humour.
He has reported across Kenya, Africa, and global assignments, covering breaking news, politics, business, and human-interest stories for audiences.

Madowo has become one of the most prominent African voices in the diaspora. He consistently brings African perspectives into global conversations while also highlighting stories of Africans living abroad through his show: African Voices.
” The show African Voices highlights the creativity, art, music from the continent,” he said.
Currently, Madowo works as a CNN International Correspondent. He contributes to breaking news coverage, live reporting, and in-depth stories on major global events. He appears regularly on flagship CNN programming such as CNN Newsroom, where he delivers live updates, reports on unfolding stories, and interviews key figures in global affairs.

He also supports CNN’s wider international coverage through field reporting and digital storytelling.
Ultimately, Madowo’s journey shows how career paths can shift over time. Still, his story highlights how purpose can evolve rather than disappear, especially when people redirect passion into new forms of service.
