DCI Arrests Fake Police Gang Behind Multi-Million Robberies Targeting Motorists in Nairobi

Share

A coordinated security operation led by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters has resulted in the arrest of three suspects believed to be part of a sophisticated robbery syndicate operating in Nairobi and its outskirts.

The team, drawn from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) and the Operation Action Team (OAT), moved in after weeks of intelligence gathering and forensic tracking of a series of violent robberies targeting motorists.

Investigators say the gang had perfected a deceptive tactic of impersonating law enforcement officers to intercept unsuspecting victims along major highways and urban roads.

One of the earliest reported cases involved a Chinese national who experienced a well-orchestrated robbery along Kyang’ombe Old Mombasa Road.

She reported that she was “flagged down by a dark grey car, Reg No. KDT 317F, occupied by two men clad in what appeared to be traffic police uniforms,” before being coerced into surrendering critical documents.

The situation escalated quickly as the suspects seized control of her vehicle and escaped with Ksh 2,140,000 in cash, which she had withdrawn from two separate banks along Mombasa Road.

In a separate but equally violent incident, another complainant lost millions after being ambushed by individuals posing as officers of the law.

Kyang’ombe Old Mombasa Road Robbery

The January 23, 2026, incident remains one of the most audacious in the series of robberies.

According to investigators, the victim was deceived by individuals “under the guise of authority” who demanded her driving license before executing the theft.

“The suspects exploited police impersonation to disarm suspicion, allowing them to take control of the victim’s vehicle and escape without immediate resistance,” DCI noted.

The stolen cash, authorities confirmed, had been withdrawn shortly before the incident.

March 17 Equity Bank Utawala Heist

On March 17, 2026, a second complainant was targeted after withdrawing Ksh 4.2 million from Equity Bank’s Utawala branch to fulfil a business order.

Police reports indicate that the victim was intercepted near Gateway Mall along Mombasa Road.

Attackers, described as four men dressed in blue police uniforms and reflector jackets, escalated the deception by brandishing firearms.

The victim was “falsely accused of trafficking narcotic drugs,” handcuffed, and forcibly placed into a vehicle before being hooded.

The gang later abandoned the victim in Karen after stealing the entire Ksh 4.2 million.

Cabanas Interchange Motorcycle Ambush

In another case linked to the same syndicate pattern, a complainant carrying Ksh 1.4 million from KCB Bank along Mombasa Road was attacked while riding a motorcycle toward Sayan Business Park.

At Cabanas Interchange, the duo was ambushed by four men travelling in a grey Mazda CX-5, registration KDQ 170T.

Attackers, again posing as police officers, forced the victims off the motorcycle, assaulted them, and blindfolded them before escaping with the cash and mobile phones.

The victims were later abandoned near Komarock Hospital in Utawala.

Following intensified investigations, detectives traced forensic leads that led to the arrest of three suspects: Boniface Kilonzo Mwaniki, apprehended along Lusaka Road; Josphat Musili, arrested in Dandora Phase IV; and Muia Mutune, arrested in Kalawa Shopping Centre, Makueni County.

The law enforcers seized a possible getaway car, registered KDW 016H, Mazda CX-5, along with a military jungle hat and three reflector jackets thought to be worn during police impersonation.

It was also noted that the criminal gang often changes license plates to avoid recognition.
