The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) matches students to degree and diploma programmes based on their KCSE grades and subject combinations.
Many competitive and science-oriented courses include Chemistry as a required or core subject within their entry criteria.
Chemistry is considered extremely useful for a wide range of career areas such as: Pharmacy, Ag Science, Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Engineering, General Sciences, Dietician, Nursing, Food Science, Biotechnology and Medical Laboratory Technology.
KUCCPS groups programmes into clusters, and each cluster has subject requirements that often include Chemistry, especially for Science, Engineering, Medicine, and Health-related fields.
In general, Chemistry is considered a compulsory subject for many KUCCPS courses if it appears as either a mandatory cluster subject or as a minimum subject requirement for specific programmes.
Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) – requires Chemistry and Mathematics; Chemistry is a core requirement.
Bachelor of Science in Industrial/Applied/Analytical Chemistry – Chemistry is clearly compulsory within the cluster requirements.
Biochemistry, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Medical Biochemistry – core science degrees where Chemistry and Biology are compulsory.
2. Medical, Health & Allied Sciences
Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) -requires Biology and Chemistry with high passes.
Bachelor of Pharmacy – requires Chemistry and Biology as part of strong science subject performance.
Medical Laboratory Science & Technology -Chemistry combined with Biology for eligibility.
Environmental Health Sciences, Optometry & Vision Sciences – manage strong science backgrounds including Chemistry.

3. Engineering & Technology
Engineering degrees generally require Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry:
In all these, Chemistry forms part of the required science subjects for KUCCPS placement.
Many diploma courses at colleges and institutions (including Kenya Medical Training College and TVET programmes via KUCCPS) require Chemistry at KCSE:
These diploma examples show that Chemistry is compulsory or strongly recommended for entry into many science and health diploma pathways.

KUCCPS places a strong emphasis on cluster subjects when calculating eligibility and placement, especially for science-intensive programmes.
These often include:
Mathematics and sometimes English/Kiswahili.
Courses in science, health, engineering, and technology require students to have taken Chemistry during KCSE -because it demonstrates preparedness for the technical content in these fields.
