The Ministry of Education has phased out a major diploma in education course and merged two other courses into a single course.
In a statement dated January 19, Basic Education PS Julius Bitok said the Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE) has been merged with the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) and renamed the Diploma in Teacher Education Pre-Primary and Primary (DTE PP & P).
He further stated that the Upgrade Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (UDECTE) has been discontinued.
“The Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE) course has been merged with the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) and re-designated as the Diploma in Teacher Education Pre-Primary and Primary (DTE PP & P). Consequently, the Upgrade Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (UDECTE) has been discontinued,” Bitok said.
Bitok directed the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to stop registering candidates for assessment under the DECTE or UDECTE programmes.
Additionally, the PS said that Teacher Training Colleges will offer the DTE PP & P programme strictly on a full-time basis, with the school-based mode of training remaining suspended until further notice.
“Accordingly, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) is directed not to register any candidates for assessment under the DECTE or UDECTE programmes. Further, all Teacher Training Colleges shall offer the DTE PP & P programme strictly on a full-time basis. The school-based mode of training remains suspended until further notice,” he said.
