NTSA Clarifies Mandatory Physical Fitness Tests for PSV and Commercial Drivers

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued clarification regarding mandatory physical fitness tests for Public Service Vehicles (PSV) and commercial drivers, as outlined under Section 105A of the Traffic Act (Cap 403).

In a notice dated Wednesday, January 28, 2026, the Authority stated that the mandatory physical fitness tests have not yet been implemented nationwide.

“This is to clarify that the mandatory physical fitness tests for PSV and commercial drivers, as required under Section 105A of the Traffic Act (Cap 403), has not yet been rolled out,” read part of the notice.

NTSA Issues Clarification on Mandatory Physical Fitness Tests for PSV and Commercial Drivers

The clarification comes after a health initiative was held in Nairobi on Tuesday, January 27 2026, led by ENA Coach in partnership with medical providers. While the initiative offered screenings for drivers, NTSA stressed that it does not signal a formal rollout of the mandatory fitness tests.

“Similar health drives have previously been conducted in various parts of the country, supported by public transport operators, school transport providers, and a range of public and private entities,” noted NTSA.

“These include Vivo Energy Kenya, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Red Cross, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, NACADA, St. John Ambulance, AA Kenya, Equity Afya, Eldoret Hospital, Lions SightFirst Eye Hospital, Karen Hospital, City Eye Hospital, among others.”

At the same time, the Authority stated that it is working closely with the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) to develop a National Framework for the medical assessment to facilitate the physical fitness tests.

NTSA further assured the public that the rollout of the physical fitness tests and any related requirements will be announced through an official Public Notice and via the Authority’s official communication channels.
