The Catholic philosophy of higher education, which emphasizes a free and comprehensive pursuit of truth concerning nature, humanity, and God, is the foundation of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).

The main campus of the university is located in Lang’ata, southwest Nairobi, along Bogani East Road. Originally called the Catholic Higher Institute of Eastern Africa (CHIEA), CUEA was founded on September 3, 1984, as a graduate school of theology.

The Association of Member Episcopal Conferences of Eastern Africa (AMECEA), a regional ecclesiastical authority, established the Institute (CHIEA) in 1984.

The Congregation for Catholic Education in Vatican City authorized the Catholic Higher Institute of Eastern Africa (CHIEA) to offer two-year Licentiate and Master’s degrees on May 2, 1984 (cf. Prot. N. 821/80/34)

CHIEA was formally opened by Pope John Paul II in August 18, 1985.
