A marriage certificate is the official document issued by the government, serving as proof that the couple is legally married.

Marriage institution is enacted in Article 45 of the Constitution recognizes the family as the basic natural and fundamental unit of society and thus has to be recognized and protected by the state.

Furthermore, the Marriage Act, 2014 was enacted to give effect to these constitutional provisions.

What Happens Before the Ceremony?

The couple is required to visit the Registrar of Marriages with a clear intention of submitting a “Notice of Marriage” form before tying the knot.

You will be required to pay a fee for the notice of marriage and wait for 21 days to allow possible objections.

When the wait of notice period is over, you will be required to complete an affidavit with the instructions of the Registrar.

Applicants should have: Birth certificates, passport photos, a divorce decree, or a death certificate is also accepted.

In the case that you are not a Kenyan national, you will present a valid passport and other necessary documents.

What is Required During and After the Ceremony

After making payment for the ceremony and completing the necessary paperwork and other requirements, the date of the ceremony will be booked.

According to the Registrar, the Marriage ceremony should have to take place on the booked date and after that marriage certificate will be processed and given out.

Steps Of Applying Marriage Certificate Online

Open the e-Citizen portal through the official website, (eCitizen.go.ke).

If you don’t have an account, create one using your personal credentials and log in to your e-Citizen account.

Navigate to civil registration and select “Marriage Certificate Application.”

You will be required to fill out the online application form, presenting the details of the couple.

After you have filled, attach documents like national identification (ID) cards or passports for both parties, among other documents specified.

Initiate payment for the service by using credit/ debit cards, mobile money, bank transfers among others.

Click the submit button to submit your application and wait for approval.

An individual can track the processing exercise via the e-Citizen portal.

You will be notified through SMS or email when your certificate is ready and where to collect it.
