54-Year-Old Suspect Arrested After Mentally Challenged Man Dies in Mob Attack

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a 54-year-old man following the death of a 35-year-old mentally challenged man who was attacked after allegedly being mistaken for a thief in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia County.

In a statement dated October 6, the detectives said the incident happened in Milimani Location, Kiminini Sub-County, where the victim, Dennis Imboha, had reportedly wandered away from his home and ended up at a neighbouring homestead.

“Kiminini detectives in Trans Nzoia County have apprehended a 54-year-old man in connection with the gruesome murder of a mentally challenged man, who was mistaken for a thief and subjected to mob injustice in Milimani Location, Kiminini Sub-County,” read part of the statement.

Man Dies After Being Mistaken for Thief

According to the DCI, Imboha was mistaken for a thief after arriving at the homestead. He was subsequently attacked by a mob and sustained multiple serious injuries during the assault.

Following the attack, Dennis Imboha was rushed to Kijana Wamalwa Hospital for treatment but later died while receiving medical attention.

His body was later preserved at the hospital mortuary pending an autopsy.

As a result, detectives visited the scene and processed the incident it as they gathered evidence to establish what happened.

“Following this, detectives swiftly arrived at the scene to collect evidence and process the area as part of their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Dennis’s death. His body was preserved at the hospital mortuary pending autopsy,” read part of the statement.

DCI Warns Public Against Taking Law Into Their Own Hands

Furthermore, the DCI said detectives later conducted an intelligence-led operation in Milimani Location, leading to the arrest of 54-year-old Joseph Apollo, who is currently undergoing processing pending arraignment in court.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with detectives pursuing additional leads to identify and apprehend other people who may have been involved in the fatal assault.

The DCI said it remains committed to establishing the full circumstances surrounding Imboha’s death and ensuring that all those found culpable face the law.

Additionally, the agency expressed its condolences to Imboha’s family, friends and loved ones following his death.

The DCI urged members of the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and instead allow authorities to handle suspected criminal cases through the legal process.

“Members of the public are, once again, reminded to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and to let the law take its due course,” read part of the statement.
