Senator Karen Nyamu has once again found herself at the centre of public attention after a video captured her sucking her thumb during a Senate sitting on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, with her use of a mobile phone during the proceedings also becoming part of the conversation.
The footage shows Nyamu seated in the Senate chamber as proceedings continue, at one point holding her phone before putting her thumb in her mouth.
The clip has since circulated widely online, prompting questions from members of the public over the conduct of legislators while the House is in session.
This incident has added to a string of moments in recent months that have seen Nyamu become the subject of public discussion beyond the issues she has been addressing in her political role.
Senate footage puts spotlight on Nyamu
Nyamu has previously attracted public attention over her conduct and remarks in different settings, but the latest incident stands out because it was captured inside the Senate while an official sitting was underway.
Use of phones in parliamentary chambers has previously drawn public attention, particularly when lawmakers are seen using their devices during debates or other proceedings.

In Nyamu’s case, the latest footage combines the phone use with the unusual moment involving her thumb, creating a scene that quickly moved beyond the proceedings themselves.
The senator has remained a prominent figure in public and political conversations, with her appearances often generating discussion on social media and in the wider public space.
Her latest moment in the Senate comes only days after another public appearance placed her in an uncomfortable spotlight, this time at an event focused on endometriosis.
Nyamu heckled at Natalie Githinji’s endometriosis event
On September 27, Nyamu attended Natalie Githinji’s Endometriosis Warriors event at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), where she was invited to speak about endometriosis and her work around the condition.
Her appearance was interrupted by sections of the crowd, who broke into “Wantam” chants as she addressed the gathering.
Some attendees also demanded that she leave the podium, turning what was intended to be a health awareness event into a moment of political confrontation.
Nyamu later said she had anticipated the reaction because activist Eric Omondi, who has been vocal in his criticism of the government, was associated with the event.
“I was kind of expecting it because the event has been organised by activist Eric Omondi and he has been in the forefront fighting the government,” Nyamu said.

Despite the reception, Nyamu defended her decision to attend, saying her interest in the event was connected to her work on endometriosis rather than the political atmosphere surrounding it.
She also maintained that she would continue attending engagements linked to the condition despite the possibility of facing political chants.
“I had a choice to come or not to come. And for me, I cannot stop coming because there will be ‘One Term’ chants,” she said.
The KICC incident was followed by further discussion over Nyamu’s presence at the event, with reports also carrying claims and counterclaims surrounding the circumstances of the heckling.
