Uganda Govt Spokesperson Responds to How Kenyan Ebola Patient Passed Through Uganda

Uganda has pushed back against questions surrounding the movement of a Kenyan man who later tested positive for Ebola after travelling from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) through Uganda to Kenya.
Ugandan media personality Alan Kasujja said several Western media organisations had contacted him seeking answers on how the Kenyan patient managed to travel through Uganda before arriving in Kenya.
His response came shortly after Kenya confirmed its first imported case of Ebola-Bundibugyo virus disease on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.
Kasujja Tells Media to Focus on Kenya’s Controls
Kasujja questioned why attention was being placed on Uganda when the patient had also undergone health screening after arriving in Kenya.
“7 western media organisations have called me to ask how the Kenyan who died from Ebola was able to go through Uganda,” Kasujja said.
“7!!”
He argued that questions should instead be directed at the screening procedures at Kenya’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
“Our beloved Kenyans have strict Ebola controls at JKIA,” he said.
“Shouldn’t you be asking how he got through those controls.”
Kasujja further urged the media to leave Uganda out of the discussion.
“Leave Uganda out of this conversation,” he said.
‘We Don’t Have Ebola Here’
Kasujja insisted that Uganda does not currently have Ebola, pointing to the country’s earlier declaration that it had ended its 2026 outbreak.
“We don’t have Ebola here,” he said.
“Thanks. Leave us out of this Ebola thing. We have moved on.”
Uganda’s Ministry of Health declared the country Ebola-free in July after no new transmission was detected and all identified contacts completed the required follow-up period.
Kasujja later expressed solidarity with Kenyans following the confirmation of the case.
“We stand in solidarity with our Kenyan relatives. It’s one case,” he said.

Kenyan Patient Travelled Through Kampala
Kenya’s Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale confirmed that the patient was a Kenyan citizen who had lived in the DRC for seven years.
Duale said the patient fell ill about a month earlier and received treatment at several hospitals in the DRC before travelling to Kampala by road. He then boarded a Jambojet flight to Nairobi and arrived at JKIA on Saturday.
The patient underwent public health screening at the airport before passing through immigration. He was later taken directly to Nairobi Hospital by a relative and a friend, where he was isolated and subsequently transferred to the hospital’s East Wing Isolation Facility.
Doctors later tested samples from the patient at the National Virology Reference Laboratory and a Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) laboratory. Both tests confirmed Ebola-Bundibugyo virus disease.

Patient Died in Nairobi
The patient received supportive treatment but died on Monday night. Kenyan authorities have since begun tracing people who may have come into contact with him, including passengers and crew members from the flight he used to travel from Uganda to Nairobi.
The development has raised questions about how the patient was able to travel internationally while carrying the virus, particularly given the health screening measures put in place in the region.
