Tanzania Police has announced the arrest of a Kenyan citizen serving in the United States (US) Army.
In a statement, the Tanzania Police said Charles Onkuri Ongeta, 30 years old, a dual citizen of the United States and Kenya, was arrested on the evening of Sunday, November 16, 2025, at the Tanzania-Kenya border.
Ongeta, a US Army Soldier with the rank of Sergeant, had four CS M68 hand grenades.
He was entering Tanzania from Kenya using a vehicle with registration numbers KDP 502 Y, a Toyota Land Cruiser.
“Tarime Rorya Regional Police Force today, November 16, 2025, at 06:00 pm in the Tanzania-Kenya border area, Sirari, has arrested Charles Onkuri Ongeta, 30 years old, a dual citizen of the United States and Kenya, a US Army Soldier with the rank of Sergeant, with four CS M68 hand grenades from Kenya entering Tanzania using a vehicle with registration numbers KDP 502 Y, a Toyota Land Cruiser,” reads part of the statement.

The Police said the Firearms Act does not allow individuals to enter Tanzania with the grenades.
Currently, the police force is conducting investigations, and the suspect is being questioned.

“The grenades, according to the Firearms Act, even if he had applied for a permit to enter the country with them, would not have been allowed,” Tanzania Police said.
“Evidence is continuing to be collected in parallel with questioning on these allegations so that appropriate action according to the law can be taken against him.”
