Strathmore University: Courses Offered, Fees, Location, and Campuses

Strathmore was founded in 1961 under the inspiration and encouragement of St. Josemaría Escrivá, the founder of Opus Dei.

At its inception, it was a pioneering institution, the first in pre-independence Kenya to accommodate students of all races, religions, and social backgrounds, breaking the segregation norms of the time.

Originally starting as an Advanced-level Sixth Form College for men, it later expanded into accounting in 1966.

In 1993, Strathmore College merged with Kianda College (a women’s college) and moved to its current location in Madaraka, Nairobi. It was granted its University Charter in 2008.

Construction of the new campus commenced in September 1989. Meanwhile, in January 1991, the Information Technology Centre was started in the Lavington Campus to run computer courses leading to the Institute for the Management of Information Systems (formerly Institute of Data Processing Management) Diploma and Higher Diploma.

In January 1992, a Distance Learning Centre was opened to offer correspondence courses in Accountancy to students who are unable to attend lectures.

In January 199,3 Strathmore College merged with Kianda College and moved to Ole Sangale Road, Madaraka Estate.

  Accommodation

There are many privately owned facilities around the University. Students are assisted in finding a hostel by being provided with information on the different hostel facilities.

Undergraduate Tuition and Mandatory Costs

Annual tuition rates for bachelor’s degrees are determined by the specific field of study. Below are the yearly rates for our primary undergraduate offerings:

• Business Administration: Ksh 450,000 per year
• Law (LLB): Ksh 600,000 per year
• Information Technology (IT): Ksh 500,000 per year
• Hospitality and Hotel Management: Ksh 565,775

Supplementary Academic Fees

Beyond basic tuition, students should budget for the following mandatory administrative costs:

• Registration: A one-off payment of Ksh 5,000 upon entry.
• Library Access: Ksh 3,000 billed annually.
• Examination Fees: Ksh 10,000 charged every semester.

Estimated Total: When accounting for tuition and recurring administrative fees, a typical undergraduate student can expect a total yearly investment between Ksh460,000 and Ksh620,000.

Postgraduate Studies

Fees for Master’s level programs are calculated on a per-semester basis. Please note that final costs may increase depending on individual research requirements and academic supplies.

• Master of Business Administration (MBA): Ksh 350,000 / semester
• Master of Public Policy: Ksh 330,000 / semester
• Master of Finance: Ksh 300,000 / semester

Short-Term & Professional Courses

For those seeking specialized certifications or diplomas, the following annual rates apply:

• Diploma in Business Management: Ksh 250,000 per annum
