Kenyatta University has appointed Prof John Okumu as the Acting Vice-Chancellor following the retirement of Prof Paul Wainaina, whose eight-year tenure at the institution came to an end.

The announcement was made on Friday afternoon during a farewell event held in honour of the outgoing Vice-Chancellor.

During the ceremony, Prof Wainaina expressed confidence in his successor, noting that the council and ministry had requested Prof Okumu to take over the role temporarily.

“I am so happy to have one person I felt could take the mantle, being requested by the council and supported by the ministry, to lead until the process is finalised. I hope you will be confirmed. The storm is still there when you are acting, but I know this crowd is supporting you,” he said.

At the same time, he reassured the university community of his confidence in Prof Okumu’s ability to navigate the institution during this transition.

“I know you are prepared, and I know the people here are ready for you. The new council will support you. They have seen what we have done and they want to be identified with you,’ said the outgoing VC.

Prof Wainaina’s tenure was not without challenges. He faced legal disputes over compulsory leave, which he successfully contested in court, disagreements with the State regarding university land, and controversies surrounding the recruitment of his successor.
