Step-by-Step Guide to Filing KRA Nil Returns

Share

Filing returns is a compulsory requirement for all registered taxpayers in Kenya. Even if they have not earned any income within a given financial year.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) requires individuals to submit these returns to abide by the law and avoid penalties.

Who Should File Nil Returns?

Nil returns are supposed to be filed by Kenyan individuals who registered on the KRA iTax system but have no visible taxable income.

This includes students, unemployed people, and those not engaged in any activity that generates income during the financial year.

Step-by-Step Process

To file nil returns, start by visiting the official KRA iTax portal. Log in using your KRA PIN and password.

Once logged in, move to the “Returns” tab and select “File Nil Return.”

Next, choose the appropriate tax obligation, which is usually Income Tax – Resident Individual. Select the relevant return period, typically the previous financial year.

After confirming your required details, click submit. The system will generate a receipt instantly, which you should download and keep for your future records.

This receipt serves as proof that you have complied with KRA requirements.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Many taxpayers make mistakes, such as selecting the wrong tax obligation or filing returns for the wrong financial year.

Others also forget to download the receipt, which may be required for future reference.

Why It Matters

Failure to file nil returns can attract penalties of up to Ksh 2,000. Filing on time ensures you maintain a clean tax record, which is crucial when applying for government services such as tax compliance certificates.

Deadline to Remember

The deadline for filing returns in Kenya is usually on 30th June every year, before a new financial year begins in July.

Taxpayers are encouraged by KRA to file early enough to avoid last-minute system congestion.

By following these simple steps, Kenyans can easily abide by the law and avoid unnecessary fines by KRA.
