KICD Sends Notice to Principals on Grade 10 Textbook Distribution

Share

The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has directed all senior school principals to confirm Grade 10 student enrollment and textbook data by April 10, 2026, in a move aimed at streamlining the second phase of textbook distribution under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

In a notice on April 7, KICD said it is seeking to confirm the Grade 10 student enrolment data in every public Senior School by the end of First Term 2026, in terms of the number of learners taking various subjects

The directive comes as education stakeholders raise concerns over delays and inconsistencies in the supply of learning materials to schools across the country.

The first phase of textbook distribution, which relied on data from the Ministry of Education, has already been completed.

However, gaps in delivery, including shortages and surplus allocations, have prompted the need for updated and verified data from individual institutions.

“This will inform the second phase of distribution of Grade 10 textbooks to ensure that all learners have received textbooks in all subjects on a One – to – One ratio as per Government Policy,” KICD said.

Ong’ondo: Data Accuracy Crucial

According to KICD, principals are required to submit the current number of Grade 10 learners per subject, alongside the exact number of textbooks received for each subject.

This information will guide redistribution efforts and ensure adherence to the government’s one-to-one textbook policy, where every learner is entitled to their own copy.

KICD Chief Executive Officer Charles Ong ’Ondo underscored the urgency of the exercise in a recent media briefing, saying “The accuracy of this data will determine how effectively we can supply textbooks to every learner without delay.”

Support for Schools

The institute emphasized that failure to meet the April 10 deadline could disrupt learning, particularly for the pioneer cohort transitioning into senior school under the CBC system.

Schools that have not received textbooks or those with excess supplies have been advised to report promptly for corrective action.

Professor Charles O. Ong’ondo, PhD., MBS, the Director/Chief Executive Officer of KICD, has signed the directive, underscoring the institute’s commitment to supporting quality education.

The deadline is fast approaching, so schools should act quickly to avoid any potential disruptions to the learning process.
