African Union Withdraws Unverified Algeria Terror Statement

Share

The African Union (AU) has withdrawn an earlier press statement that referenced a purported terrorist incident in Algeria, saying the information it relied on was not confirmed by official sources.

In a clarification shared on its official X account, the AU said it issued the initial statement based on information that later proved unverified.

The organisation noted that the claims had not been corroborated by any official channels in Algeria at the time of publication.

The AU formally retracted the communication and confirmed that it was based on unverified information.

“We wish to formally withdraw the press statement issued earlier regarding a purported terrorist incident in Algeria,” it stated.

The continental body also expressed regret over any confusion caused by the earlier communication.

“The information on which the statement was based has not been corroborated by official sources,” it added.

“We regret any confusion this may have caused and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that all public communications are grounded in verified and reliable information,” it further said.

No Official Confirmation from Algeria

At the time of the AU’s correction, authorities in Algeria had not confirmed any terrorist incident related to the withdrawn statement.

This absence of official verification contributed to the AU’s decision to retract the communication.

Following the withdrawal, the AU reiterated its commitment to accuracy in public communication. It stressed the need to rely on verified and reliable information before issuing any security-related statements.

Questions Remain over Initial Alert

The AU did not disclose further details on how the unverified information was received or whether it would conduct an internal review into the matter.

The incident has highlighted concerns over the risks of disseminating unverified security information.

It also underscores the importance of verification in official communications involving sensitive security matters across the continent.
