The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has condemned rising incidents of political violence, warning that the use of goons to disrupt lawful gatherings threatens Kenya’s constitutional order.
In a press statement dated April 14, 2026, the society raised concern over recent cases where violent groups disrupted political events, sometimes with alleged involvement or inaction by law enforcement officers.
The LSK said such actions undermine constitutional freedoms, including the rights to assembly, association, and expression.
“Political violence, whether perpetrated by goons or enabled by state actors, is antithetical to the constitutional democracy we fought to build,” said LSK President Charles Kanjama.
Additionally, the lawyers’ body criticized police conduct during such incidents, insisting that officers must uphold the Constitution at all times.
“Police serve the Constitution and the people, not political actors,” added Kanjama.
The LSK warned that any officer who enables or participates in violence must face legal consequences.

Consequently, the society called for immediate and independent investigations into the incidents. It also urged authorities to prosecute all perpetrators, including any complicit police officers.
Further, the LSK pressed for accountability within the command structure of the National Police Service and called on oversight bodies to act decisively.
Beyond immediate action, the society advocated for structural reforms to curb political violence. It called for stronger oversight, stricter enforcement of disciplinary standards, and clear guidelines to regulate conduct during political events.
At the same time, the LSK urged political actors to take responsibility for their supporters and discourage violence.

Meanwhile, the society cautioned that continued goonism could erode public trust in democratic institutions. It urged all stakeholders to de-escalate tensions and uphold the rule of law.
The LSK reaffirmed its commitment to defending constitutional rights, stressing that Kenya’s democracy depends on protecting lawful political participation from violence and intimidation.
