Drivers Announce New KSh 450 Minimum Fare for Short Rides Across Uber, Bolt

The Organization of Online Drivers (OOD) has announced a new minimum fare for short-distance trips, citing rising fuel prices and operational costs following recent regulatory adjustments by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

In a public notice, the drivers’ body said the changes were necessary to cushion drivers against economic pressures and ensure sustainable earnings across platforms such as Uber, Bolt, Little Cab, and Yego.

“Following the recent fuel price review announced by EPRA and the ongoing rise in operational costs, we, the Organization of Online Drivers (OOD), have set a new minimum fare for short trips,” the statement read in part.

The association specified that a minimum fare of Ksh 450 for up to 3KM distance will now apply, emphasizing that the move is intended to ensure sustainable earning for our drivers.

Drivers Cite Economic Pressures

The announcement underscores growing tensions within Kenya’s ride-hailing ecosystem, where drivers have long complained about declining earnings amid rising fuel and maintenance costs.

According to OOD, the new pricing structure is aimed at restoring income stability.

“This minimum fare of Ksh 450 for a maximum of 3KM for short trips will ensure that drivers earn a fair and sustainable income amidst the changing economic environment,” the statement added.

Role of Ride-Hailing for Every Day Travel

Despite all of those, ride-hailing applications have found themselves integrated in the transportation infrastructure of Nairobi, Kenya.

People make use of the app to get to their destination at work or at educational institutions, and it takes up to 36% of customers.

Everyday, transportation experience for Kenyan citizens became much easier due to the ride-hailing services.

The average time required for getting a ride from digital taxis is 7.2 minutes, meaning that such means become even more dependable than the usual taxi or public transportation.

Moreover, ride-hailing completely changed people’s attitude towards using the usual transportation options, as 35% of the people are not that dependent on usual taxis anymore, whereas 40% use conventional bodabodas less frequently.

Economic aspect of ride-hailing is significant too.

For instance, 62% of the drivers earn money using ride-hailing platforms.
