The National Police Service (NPS) has broken its silence following a violent incident near Ishiara Level 4 Hospital in Embu County that left two people dead on April 14, 2026.
In a statement on April 15, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja confirmed the fatalities and expressed condolences to the affected families, friends, and relatives.
The incident followed what had initially been planned as a peaceful demonstration by members of the Evurore Ward community protesting issues related to the hospital.
Initially, the protest began peacefully after organisers notified the police in advance. However, the situation quickly escalated.
The service reported that criminal elements infiltrated the demonstration and triggered violence. As a result, businesses were vandalised while several bystanders sustained injuries during the unrest.
“Any loss of life is something that the Service takes great exception to, as one life lost is one too many,” the NPS stated, addressing the tragic outcome.
Meanwhile, police officers moved swiftly to restore order but encountered resistance from individuals armed with crude weapons, including stones and other projectiles.
The service noted that the violence showed how individuals with criminal motives had overtaken the initial peaceful intentions.

Additionally, the police called on members of the public to support the investigation by sharing any relevant information. They urged citizens to report to the nearest police station or use official communication channels, including toll-free numbers and social media platforms.
In conclusion, the service reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining order. It also called for public cooperation to help uncover the circumstances that led to the deadly confrontation.
