A lady who runs a business selling samosas at Haiga Market, located in Shinyalu Constituency, Kakamega County, is currently recuperating from severe injuries after she was reportedly assaulted and scalded with boiling water by one of her customers over a minor conflict related to a change for just two samosas.

This occurrence happened at her food stand on Wednesday, April 15, this week and has highlighted the growing hostility in small-scale businesses due to financial disputes.

The mother of three children reportedly faced an ugly turn of events while selling her food when the fight broke out over a petty amount of money worth Ksh 20 before erupting into a violent assault that left her injured with burns on her arms and thighs.

She was immediately rushed to the hospital for medical assistance due to her severe injuries from the assault.

Violence Follows Disagreement over Ksh 20

The dispute arose after the consumer brought Ksh 1,000, wishing to purchase two samosas and wanting change that was not readily available to the seller.

This relatively small disagreement soon resulted in violent behavior.

According to the injured vendor, identified as Shalvine Khayi, the customer became violent after being told to source smaller change from another shop.

“She came with one thousand shillings and wanted two samosas. I told her I did not have change and asked her to find twenty shillings from another shop and bring it to me,” she said.

Shalvine added that the situation deteriorated rapidly.

“She started slapping me. I then saw her friend Sharon approaching with a jug, and those nearby warned me to run because she intended to burn me with hot water. I tried to escape but slipped and fell, and that is when she poured hot water on me,” she narrated.

Khayi further explained that she used her sweater in a desperate attempt to shield her face from the boiling liquid, but her arm and thighs were still severely burned in the process.

She described the attack as sudden and terrifying, leaving her unable to defend herself effectively as panic spread in the area.

She also alleged that the attacker had an additional substance in a container and claimed she intended to contaminate her food.

“I was wearing a sweater, and I used it to protect my face. The hot water burned my hand and thighs,” she said.
