The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has defended Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s decision to appoint Calvince Okoth, popularly known as Gaucho or “Ghetto President,” to the board of Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.
The appointment, made through a gazette notice dated Friday, April 17, 2026, has sparked public debate, with critics questioning Gaucho’s suitability for the role.
In a statement issued on Sunday, April 19, 2026, KMPDU Deputy Secretary General Dr Dennis Miskellah backed the governor’s decision, arguing that the law allows for community representation in hospital management.
“The governor is right in appointing Gaucho. The Facility Improvement Fund (FIF) Act requires the community to have a say in how funds are utilised in hospitals,” he said.
Miskellah criticised opponents of the move, saying some Kenyans hold elitist views about leadership and representation.
“We are so elitist that we think the majority of Kenyans do not deserve a seat at the table,” he added.
He further clarified that hospital boards do not handle day-to-day operations but instead provide oversight and policy direction.
“Hospital boards exist in all hospitals. They are not involved in daily running but offer oversight. In other counties, they include boda boda riders and mama mboga as envisioned under the FIF Act,” he said.

The remarks triggered mixed reactions from the public.
A social media user, Razik Amin, opposed the appointment, saying: “Kenyans of good standing… Gaucho is of questionable character. This is a matter of life and death.”
Another user, Wesley, questioned the relevance of Gaucho’s experience, arguing that technical decisions in healthcare require professional expertise.
“It’s not about having a seat at the table but service delivery. This is a clear mismatch of skills,” he said.

However, others supported Miskellah’s stance.
Social media influencer Dr Austine Omondi, also known as Ja Prado, downplayed the controversy, saying the criticism would not change the appointment.
“Nothing will happen about Gaucho’s appointment. Most Kenyans would have no issue if it were them or their relatives,” he said.
Another user, Rein Asamoh, drew comparisons to past public reactions to unconventional achievements.
“You celebrate Githeri Man for a Harvard opportunity but bash Gaucho over a hospital board appointment,” he said.
Gaucho, a vocal supporter of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), rose to prominence through Bunge la Wananchi forums—informal platforms where citizens debate political and social issues. He is also known for his close association with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
His appointment has continued to draw sharp reactions, with critics questioning the criteria used in selecting board members.
