AU Commission Criticizes Israel’s Somaliland Diplomatic Appointment

Share

The African Union (AU) has expressed concern over reports that Israel has moved to appoint a diplomatic envoy to Somaliland.

In a statement dated April 19 2026, the Commission reaffirmed the African Union’s consistent position that it does not recognize Somaliland as an independent state

The Union says that the development could undermine long-standing principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity in Africa

AU emphasized that Somaliland remains part of Somalia, in line with international law and the African Union’s Constitutive Act, which upholds respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all member states.

Somaliland Not Recognized As A State

The statement further stated that any unilateral move toward recognition of Somaliland’s independence is considered invalid within the African Union framework.

It warned that such actions risk destabilizing Somalia and even the broader Horn of Africa region, which has in recent years faced complex security and political challenges.

AU On Somalia’s Unity

Further, the Union recalled discussions that were held during the 1324th meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council on January 6, 2026.

Member states reiterated the importance of respecting Somalia’s unity and supporting ongoing efforts toward national reconciliation and state building.

AU had previously emphasized that external engagements that appear to confer state-like recognition to Somaliland could complicate peace efforts and weaken regional consensus.

Maintaining its position, the African Union Commission stated that it remains committed to supporting Somalia’s sovereignty, governance reforms, and long-term national cohesion.

AU also called on all external partners engaging in the region to do so in a manner that aligns with established international norms and does not interfere with Somalia’s territorial integrity.

The reported decision by Israel has therefore drawn diplomatic sensitivity, with the African Union warning that any engagement perceived as recognition of Somaliland’s independence could bring geopolitical implications.

While the statement did not announce specific measures put in place, it signaled continued monitoring of developments.

The statement also reiterated AU’s preference for dialogue and adherence to frameworks in addressing disputes related to the recognition of countries in Africa.
