KRA Sends WhatsApp Tax Alerts to Selected Kenyans With a Deadline

Share

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has served notices to selected taxpayers through the issuance of deadlines, which are a result of analysis of data obtained from the electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS).

In particular, this notification stems from a chat on WhatsApp via the help line of KRA, which is usually called “Dada Shuru.”

It features information about the business activities conducted by certain individuals and amounts of taxes to be paid for that year, specifically 2025.

According to KRA, their digital tax collection platform has helped identify declared business activity linked to each Personal Identification Number (PIN) registered.

The document demonstrates an increased use of digital tax systems to determine the source of income and expenses declared as such.

Here are examples of one of the taxpayers’ notifications from KRA:

“Hello, The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) thanks you for your continuous support in maintaining tax compliance and strives to make this easier for you.”

eTIMS-Based Income Assessment

The notice indicated that KRA had identified business transactions totaling Ksh 360,000 under the taxpayer’s PIN for the year 2025.

The system also noted that no deductible expenses were recorded for the period under review.

The communication continued:

“KRA has identified business transactions recorded under your PIN through the electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS) for the year 2025 amounting to Ksh 360,000.”

It further stated:

“Additionally, expenses amounting to KES N/A were recorded.”

The authority concluded that the taxable income stood at Ksh 360,000, translating to a tax liability of Ksh 18,000, which must be settled by 30 April 2026 to avoid penalties and accrued interest.

Digital Compliance and Enforcement Enforcement

To counter such notices being circulated, KRA released an explanatory and advisory statement via their WhatsApp help line to ensure that taxpayers are aware.

This was in light of the following statements by the authority:

“BTW hii si jaba, kama umepata hii message anza kupanga mikakati mapema.”

Further stressing urgency and dissuading any false information, the statement read:

“Dada Shuru ako pale wozzap kukusaidia, wa.me/254711099999”
