Peter Edung, a 14-year-old student who was in Grade Nine at Ol Maisor Primary School in Laikipia North, died on Tuesday when a teenage friend is suspected to have shot him while they were hunting a hyena in Kinamba Sosian Village.
Police and community leaders said the boy was found to have died from the bullet wounds and the owner of the rifle the friend allegedly used is still not known as the suspect is a 15-year-old child to a local rancher and may have used his father’s rifle.
The community is pressing for a full investigation into the matter with area elder Amuria Lorere stating that “concerns have already begun to rise as to how the young man came to possess a firearm.”
“We demand full accountability and thorough investigations into the whole issue. We want those involved held accountable for their deeds,” Lorere said.
Local area leaders, including the education chief officer Jecintah Koree and area Member of County Assembly Sammy Lokopien have expressed disappointment with what they describe as slowness in investigations.
They have accused the authorities of interference with due process and slow response to the critical matter
So far, no arrests had been made with no word as to the progress of investigations, said Lokopien and Koree, both demanding rapid action and due process in investigation of the whole matter.
The locals now claim that those who released the rifle to a minor for hunting are not only criminals but also killers and that such individuals will not be let go off the hook easily.
The community has vowed to hold demonstrations and press for full accountability until justice is done to Edung’s family.
The body of Edung has since been taken to the Rumuruti Funeral Home pending the commencement of investigations and the said teenager who is responsible for the shooting is still at large and his location unknown.
